I also had the issue where the option to 'take a piece' was grayed out and the message given was that I must wait for the newlyweds to take the first slice. I tried with both the bride and groom and neither could take the first slice. I moved the wedding cake to different surfaces and nothing helped.
The wedding was held in Myshuno Meadows. I had brought the cake with me, and when it didn't work, I had one of my Sims bake another cake at the venue and it didn't work either. There were other options available (including 'remove wedding topper').
As an FYI, I opted to hire both a mixologist and a caterer and for the wedding and neither showed up.
I then quit the game without saving and when I reopened I tried having the wedding at their home (large penthouse in Fashion District of San Myshuno) and the option to 'take a piece' was still grayed out for both the bride and groom. Because I quit without saving, I had to have the cake made again, so the same cake was not used for my second attempt.
It has been a long time since I've held a wedding, so I'm not sure when this problem started.
I play on Windows 10, 64 bit.
Game was repaired after my first wedding attempt failed.
Game is fully updated and I don't use mods or cc. I have all packs but the Vampire pack.
FYI, I have a copy of the game where the wedding event is still on, with the only task remaining is to 'take first slice'.

Are you still having this issue? Can you upload your Save game ?
If so, please zip up this folder: documents\electronicarts\thesims4\saves and drop the file to this Mediafire-Link to upload.
Please make sure to name the zip file with your user name.
I uploaded two game save files I had the issue with (though you will have gotten one twice, since I couldn't remember which one I chose to upload first).
One starts the morning before the wedding took place and the other is a save while the wedding is going on and you can see that the 'take the first piece' task for the wedding is still outstanding.
I have not tried to have another wedding in any other save file; I don't usually have wedding events, I tend to have them elope.
I did attempt this wedding twice in two different locations; the first time I exited without saving (I had this wedding event at the park in San Myshuno, I made the cake and brought it and when that didn't work, I had a Sim make another cake at the venue and that didn't work either).
My second attempt at a wedding was held at their penthouse (in the same save file) is what is here. FYI, the cake was not made by either of the newlyweds but I did attempt to make another cake with one of the newlyweds and that didn't help. I did not save that, I just tried it and quit without saving.
I will try to see if I can replicate this in any other save files, but I only have one file where the couple is in a position to hold a wedding. They are also located in San Myshuno. I will let you know whether or not they have the same problem.
