Didn't have it fail very often since maxing it but having them do it all the time, really is annoying.
I have the same problem and it's driving me crazy. My Sim with maxed thanatology keeps autonomously speaking the dead language to his wife, and it always causes a negative reaction with her. In the attached picture, they had just gone on a date the night before and had maxed pink and green bars and were Very Satisfied in their romance. This morning he speaks the dead language to her and now she has a festering grudge against him, though it only took a small chunk out of their pink bar. I really, really dislike having to repair their relationship constantly. Is it some like/dislike on her part? Something I can adjust?

Needs to be tuned; sims don't stop speaking dead languages and killing off their relationships.

Yeah, the festering grudge is the real kicker about this. Like dude, your wife is macabre, she’s a reaper for heaven's sake, she sometimes speaks in dead languages, why are you overreacting?! I don’t even know if my current legacy save sims can stay married because of this. Today he just got over a hurt sentiment, and almost immediately he got the festering grudge. Like why? I get it, he doesn’t like it for whatever reason, but my spouse does things I find annoying and I don’t hate him forever over it. They are otherwise totally in love, so it seems weird when out of the blue he’s got a grudge and then he’s a * for a while, which really dings the relationship further. Makes no sense really.
I'd be ok with it failing sometimes even at max level. I’d even be ok with that causing a little relationship hit. I’m not ok with these harsh negative sentiments. It’s just seems too severe. And they could definitely cut back on how often speak dead language happens too. Sometimes it’s too much.
And just for the record, I’m on PS5, so no mods or anything.

And now my maxed thanatology skilled sim has a child, and that child is getting negative sentiments from his mom speaking dead languages. It makes no sense at all that her own family would get that upset about it. Or that anyone would. If someone walks up to me and speaks a language I don’t understand, I don’t hate them vehemently for weeks after or get angry/sad when I see them again. The overreaction from other sims when it fails is ridiculous and game ruining. I was so excited to take my current legacy heir to Ravenwood, a spell caster and medium, and do all the things and become a reaper, and now she’s got a husband who walks around angry with her all the time, and a child who’s constantly either angry or sad because his reaper mother spoke a dead language to him.
This can’t be working as intended, can it? There have been times I’ve wanted a sim to get a festering grudge or hurt sentiment about one of my sims, and it took work, like repeated mean actions and such, and now all it takes is speaking a dead language once and have it fail. Every autonomous mischief action my sims have done for years now have failed and you know they love doing them (will this ever be fixed), and no one has ever gotten angry enough about it to have any kind of sentiment, so this reaction to dead languages seems way too dramatic.
And of course the cheat to lower/remove skills is still broken, so there’s nothing on console I can do to fix this myself. Sorta regret immediately buying the expansion now.
