Going to lock this thread as it doesn't have the new bug template and has become a bit of a mess.
Just make a new thread if you still have this issue occurring WITHOUT MODS.
This is so frustrating... they just get stuck at work each day even tough they're at home, this renders the game completely unplayable. Please EA fix this SOON.
Also I noticed it doesn't always happen. I tried switching households right before my sim got to work/school and then switched back and then my sim would come back normally. Still, this trick only works like 2 out of 5 times I try.
Belive me this is not the biggest/worst gamebreaking bug. I have the bill stuck in inventory bug and this bug just completely renders the game unplayable after 1 in game week, all power and water to the house is cut off. I have also noticed that out of 3 sims in my household, one of them does not get the stuck at work bug. So 2 out of 3 of my sims icons stay grey after work.
Paying the bill using the phone or computer should solve this issue.

I have a 3 sim family I started playing last night. All was going well until this morning. I loaded up my game, my sims went to work, and I waited for them to get home. By and by one of them wanders in and I was really confused because it said he was still at work. I thought perhaps he was home for lunch or something. Obviously this is not a feature in the game, but I hadn't played much yet and wasn't sure what was happening. I had not selected anything (I know some people had said this was a problem with the "work hard" option, but I hadn't played with that yet). I realized what was happening when my other sims came home and it still said they were at work too. At this point all three sims were home and listed "at work".
I tried exiting the game and going back in. It didn't help at all. I tried evicting them and moving back in as suggested, but not only did this not help, it made the game worse. When I moved them back in I noticed their family protrait had turned into a big X. Upon trying to move them in it asked me which sim I wanted to play as, which I had never seen before. It shows three characters, all listed as "secret" with an X where their portrait should be. I picked one and loaded in to find nothing but an empty house. The family's money is there, but all three sims were gone. I exited out and tried to go back in and the game froze. Then I exited back to the main menu and loaded again and my family is back, but still all listed as at work.
Please do something to fix this. I spent a lot of money on this game and I feel ripped off being unable to play it. So far all of the solutions have only made the problem worse.
