Aspiration trait broken

I finally finished the Creative aspiration today and my game told me to pick a new aspiration for my Sim which I did. But the new aspiration didn't come with the new aspiration trait. I picked Freelance Botanist and lo and behold I still had my Painter Extraordinaire trait instead of Collector. Also ALL of my reward traits have stopped working. I CAN'T EVEN use Expressionistic that I JUST earned! The options to complete emotional paintings don't show up. I've lost all reward traits I bought from the rewards store and the aspirations traits as well. Friendships are also broken and don't go past Impartial which I know it already a known issue. The game is completely unplayable now until all this is fixed. Sigh.

  • Are you using mods in your game ? And if not, did you never use them or remove before patching ?

I've seen a save where the aspiration trait was missing and then didn't want to change. I think something is corrupt on that.

How many Sims do you have in your family and is just one affected or all of them ?

  • I have no mods and never use them. I haven't checked this on any other Sims because I don't want to load up another family to have their relationships break (another issue entirely). I changed aspirations numerous times and it stayed at Painter Extraordinaire each time. I deleted my cache files and that didn't help.

Willing to share your save game ?

If so, please zip up this folder: documents\electronicarts\thesims4\saves, upload to mediafire or dropbox and PM me the link.

  • I'm sorry but I have no idea how to do any of that. I don't know what mediafire or dropbox is. I just wanted to report a bug.

I chatted with a guy at EA and he said I had a corrupted cache and to delete it and that didn't work so I deleted all my saves and started the whole game over again. I tried to change aspirations on brand new Sims and it still won't give the correct aspiration trait. It stays with the old one. There isn't even any point to trying for a new aspiration because I can't get the bonus trait. With the frienships and traits broken the game has become unplayable and I've done everything on my end to fix it. I was not having any trouble with the game unitl the new patch.

Something with the traits is broken. I haven't really had a chance to try myself since I'm a bit limited atm but try this

Try resetting your user files as described in the factory reset described in this post: http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-4/FAQ-Troubleshooting-Steps-amp-Known-Issues/m-p/3621199

You won't loose anything. Just make sure to not delete any files  and make a backup.

Try on a new game with nothing added back first (start new game). If it works, put back your save game and try again. If it still works, you can start putting stuff back.

    • Options.ini (or just re-set all your settings manually)
    • Tray Folder
    • Screenshots/Videos/Custom music
    • Rest of the save games (leave out slot_00000001.save which is the autosave)
    • Custom content like clothing, hair, skins, make up ....
    • Mods (one by one, making sure they all still work)

The rest does not need putting back, cause they are mostly cache files that recreate or log files that are not needed for the game.

  • You only get one "Bonus" trait for choosing your initial aspiration, either in CAS or upon aging up to teen. In my experience, this doesn't ever change. There are also "Reward" traits that you get for completing aspirations, but they don't become available until you complete the final tier. Some of your issues sound like bugs, but a few of them just sound like standard game mechanics working as intended. You can switch your aspirations any time without losing progress on them, but your bonus trait stays the same no matter how many times you switch/complete aspirations. At least that has always been my experience. If you use enough Potions of youth and/or skilling boosts, you could theoretically unlock all of the reward traits for completing aspirations(though it would be tough because some of them conflict), but you wouldn't get all of the bonus traits, only the initial one. I'm open to correction, but I don't think that's a bug. I think tha't the way its supposed to work. Otherwise it would be highly exploitable and you could just cycle through aspirations to get a bunch of free traits. It should also be noted that you don't have to complete apirations to switch to a new one. I'll do the lower tiers even on ones I don't want to complete just for more reward points. I also tend to complete multiple aspirations so I have a fair amount of experience with how the traits work.

The one caution I would give is that you should never accept a birthday party invitation from one of your inactive Sims (they sometimes occur randomly over the phone). Allowing a sim to age up this way does not give them the opportunity to pick their trait/aspirations and leaves you at the mercy of the rng. It is also the only case I've encountered where a Sim doesnt get a bonus trait at all. Since they don't choose their initial aspiration they just don't get a trait for it even if they switch to a different one.

  • I have four sims all affected by this and I have never used mods. What do I do?

Could you describe what happens in your game in your own words since this thread is a bit of a mixture of things.

    Thanks
