@missdeefying I think they said you can't plant everything.
Could you compile in your post which ones are not working ? Little list in the compiled field would be good
Following should be by design
- Mushrooms
- Bush-type thingies (so bonsai ?)
- Trees

I was able to plant some 'bush' type herbs in the vertical planter, such as Basil and Sage. Basil glitches out and shows no option to weed, spray or water, while Sage works fine. When removed from the vertical planter, Basil bush works as expected, but when put back into vertical planter turns to 'dead' look and can't be tended again. However, this entire time the Basil bush can be harvested without issue.
As an additional note, the seed for the Basil and Sage bushes were obtained from the specific 'Vertical Garden Herbs' seed packet.

The flavour text on the planter does say "some plants are afraid of heights" - it seems to be mostly the root/bulb types, as well as all trees. I did all my testing by moving existing plants, not trying to plant anything new (except the Soy Bean, which worked fine). The bushes that did not work were:
- Flowers: Tulip, Snapdragon, Lily, Snowdrop, Crocus, Orchid
- Fruit: Pineapple
- Vegetables: Onion, Carrot, Mushroom, Taro Root, Potato
- Herbs: False Morel Mushroom, Fireleaf, Morel Mushroom, Poison Fireleaf, Chamomile, Toxic Chamomile
- Other: Kava Root, Valerian Root, Bonsai Bud, Trash Fruit, Death Flower, U.F.O., Quill Fruit, Glow Orb
I don't have Vampires, so I couldn't test the plants from that. I didn't test a Cow Plant (I highly doubt it would work, although it's amusing to imagine).
It was winter in my game when I started, and my garden was outdoors (sheltered) and the plants looked absolutely awful at first (some of them were nothing more than a couple of twigs sticking out of the planter, and very hard to click on - I think those were the "just sprouted" stage; others were scraggly bushes, similar to plants in regular pots in winter). The grown plants still produce harvestables on their bare branches. Everything got pretty and green in spring.
And just now, doing a bit of rearranging, I found that grown/laden Strawberries do not like being under something else (much like the Pear/Lemon/Pomegranate tree model - the fruit itself causes the collision). A bit annoying, but also usually easily avoided.
