I held a birthday party for two of my sims - Adults going on to Elders. I hired their son (who is under the same household) as the caterer, since I could pick him on the Party screen.
He changed his clothes to the caterer uniform. However, when I sent him to bake a cake or cook a meal, the action doesn't show up on the side of the screen. The cost of baking a cake was deducted, but he does nothing and goes on to do other things based on his current emotions. I kept doing it a few more times, but he never cooked.
The party ended as a failure, since he didn't bake a cake.
EDIT: Even after the party, he seems to be unable to cook? When I asked him to get a quick meal, the animations of opening a refrigerator play and he gets his quick meal out of nowhere. This is happening to other sims in the household too.
I wonder if this is a bug.

This behavior has been seen by others. To fix it, exit the game, right click on the game in Origin, and select "Repair Game". That should get your cooking-related objects working normally again.
