[CHEAT] Some Cheats Don't Work for Sims With Apostrophe in Name

Product: The Sims 4
Platform:PC
Which language are you playing the game in? Svenska
How often does the bug occur? Occasionally (10% - 49%)
What is your current game version number? 1.56.52.1020
What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? All expansion packs, Vampires, Jungle Adventures, StrangerVille, Realm of Magic, Kids Room Stuff, Luxury Party Stuff, Holiday Celebration Stuff.
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Use the cheat code sims.get_sim_id_by_name firstname lastname for different sims with apostrophes in their name (mainly sims from Island Living). For example "sims.get_sim_id_by_name Nalani Mahi'ai", "sims.get_sim_id_by_name Kalamainu'u Iona", "sims.get_sim_id_by_name Paka'a Uha" (if you have him in your game, he came with a patch), and "sims.get_sim_id_by_name Mana Ka'anā'anā" (if you have him in your game, he's Lava-Man from the gallery).
What happens when the bug occurs? It says "Sim not found" for Kalamainu'u Iona and Paka'a Uha, while it returns the sim ID for Nalani Mahi'ai and Mana Ka'anā'anā.
What do you expect to see? That the sim ID can be retrieved for all sims with apostrophes in their name.
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Never used.
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? Neutral/Not Sure

I have the hypothesis that it works for sims with apostrophes in their last names (like Nalani Mahi'ai and Mana Ka'anā'anā) but not for sims with apostrophes in their first name (like Kalamainu'u Iona and Paka'a Uha).

I have tried to write their names with my keyboard directly into the cheat box, I have tried to copy their names from sims.fandom.com and paste them in the cheat box, and I have tried to write their names in a word processor (such as Notepad in Windows, where the letters are changed into being non-formated) and then copy and paste it into the cheat box, it doesn't work for sims with apostrophes in their first names but all these methods work for sims with apostrophes in their last name.

But, I found one work-around for retrieving the sim ID for sims with apostrophes in their first name. If I go into CAS and copy their name there, then it works to retrieve the sim ID by pasting the name into the cheat box. I don't understand why this works when none of the other methods works.

I tried for auto-generated sims too. I could not find any auto-generated sim with apostrophes in their first name, not in any of my save files! For auto-generated sims with apostrophes in their last name I could retrieve the sim IDs with no problems.

I also tested for sims with macron (line over letter, such as ā) in their names, it worked fine to retrieve their sim IDs no matter if the macron was in the first or last name. And it seems to work for accents (stress marks, such as ´ and `) too. So it's only the apostrophes that are buggy.

@SqueamishNerdCopy and pasting it direct from the game you get:
    Paka’a Uha
And apparently that isn't a grave or an accute or an apostrophe. In fact, I can't identify what symbol that is they used. But in the case of Nalani they did use a standard apostrohpe in her last name.

Your solution is to either copy paste the name whenever you want to use a cheat or go into CAS and rename Paka’a Uha to use a standard apostrophe.

It's not a bug, it's just they are just using a symbol there that isn't on my keyboard, which they could have copy pasted from a polynesian cultures naming site.

    Edit: I think it's a single quote mark (alt+0146).

@simvasionInteresting! It's an ’okina, a symbol used in Polynesian languages, and it's usually transcribed into an apostrophe, that's why I thought they had used apostrophes. I didn't even know that ’okina existed as a digital symbol, I thought they where always transcribed into apostrophes.

Very odd though that they seem to have used ’okina for first names and apostrophes for last names. It may be, as you mentioned earlier, that different people in the TS4 team use different symbols. They should change it (for new save files) in a patch! Even though it's nice that they've actually used ’okina we get trouble when cheating, since most people don't have ’okina on their keyboard, so I think it would make sense to change all ’okina into apostrophes.

Edit: You're right, it's a single quote mark. I found on Wikipedia that ’okina is written with single quote mark when written digitally.

Edit 2: The Wikipedia article also says that ’okina is transcribed with either single quote mark, apostrophe, or grave accent, when used in Hawaiian. When it's used in Samoan it's always transcribed by an apostrophe.

Just ran into this trying to change a relationship for Kalamainu’u Iona. She had full Friendship and Romance bars with a character I'm playing but the relationship was Acquaintance/Best Friend/Spouse. I wanted to change that to Soulmate for the Soulmate aspiration.

I tried the relationship cheats with Kalamainu'u Iona (the apostrophe) and they didn't work, so this issue is still a problem. I was able to fix it by copying the ' character from Paka’a's name in the post by @simvasion .

I then used the Alt-0146 character in sims.get_sim_id_by_name Kalamainu’u Iona and I can confirm that the Alt-code also works.

@Sketch793 You could just rename her to "Ryn Fisher", especially since that character WAS modeled after her anyway... Then you wouldn't have that problem. 🙂
  • Hi

I'm having issues modifying relationships with Sims from the Island Living pack. I have no mods at all and my game is up to date. I've noticed that if there's a special character in their name, it doesn't work. So for example, I can modify the relationship with Duane Talla, but I can't with Nalani Mahi'ai because of that apostrophe.

Is there any work around with this?

@mizumii25 Just edit their names to remove the apostrophe, cheat the relationship and then add the apostrophe back.

EDIT: Also merged this with the existing report on it.

Enable cheats. Enter cas.fulledit mode cheat. Change the symbol to an apostrophe in the name of the island person you want to change. Then save. When you type in the relationship cheat it will work this time. I just tried it.

Would it work to type quotation marks around the name when entering the cheat? That's what one has to do for two-word first names.
