The green cloud doesn't disappear immediately, so if you pull stuff out of the fridge and it was considering something you just pulled out to be spoiled, it will still be there for a little bit. That's probably why you saw it disappear in the third picture. I'm not sure what it's considering to be spoiled, or why you wouldn't have the option to clean it out.
I´ll give it a bit more time tonight to see if the fridge will be smelly when it´s empty.
Nevertheless it should not be smelly if there is nothing in there that past it´s expiration date.

I know of the reset sim, but the reset object @rumbutter???
(Edit: see you need Testingcheats on, that made my game crash once, haven't tried using that cheat ever again. But I guess it would help, because when I sell the fridge and get a new one it also is gone, for a while.)
