I have just solved this problem in my game by resetting the bar counter (not the bartender). This immediately kicked out the bartender, but, within a couple of seconds, she came back on duty and started serving customers. I've only done this once, though, so I can't guarantee that it will always work.

Just to mention that I have been playing for a couple more hours now and it still works for me. But, something perhaps worth mentioning, is that it does not solve the problem of the bartenders goofing off every so often, hanging out with the cutomers and just generally behaving like patrons instead of getting on with their work. This, as far as I can tell, is not a bug, but the way in which the game has been designed (presumably to give your sims a chance to tend the bar in their absence and so build up their mixology skills). At any rate, they have been doing this since the beginning, so it has nothing to do with the December 16 patch. Also, if the bartender is not very skilled, they spend ages just standing looking at the cocktail shaker as thought they are trying to decide what to do. Again, this is not a bug, but it does make it difficult to tell whther the bartender is actually functioning or not.

This is not how it is suppose to work, nor did it work like this before the patch. The bartenders always served drinks as people ordered and didn't stand around staring, although they frequenlty swapped which was annoying. They also wore uniforms and had the mixologist role appear above their head. As the other posters have commented, they stop serving drinks,rarely get replaced ( a bug, not a feature to allow you to tend bar as they can do that anyway) and if a new bartender shows up the don't serve drinks either (you wouldn't know anyway as the new one usually has no uniform). It has NOT been doing this since the beginning and game play is entirely broken/different in bars since the december patch. Not onlyh do the bartenders stop wearing uniforms but tons of children show up in the bar, money keeps flying out of your pocket for a drink you never get served, the bar will have up to 6-8 people ordering drinks at once, the bartender is stoic, etc etc. . This NEVER happened before. The game is broken and could never have been intended to work that way, so why would you say it is not a bug. Who wants to play with the way it works now?
Resetting does not work. They may serve one or 2 drinks, then leave or stop serving. Someone else shows up out of uniform and just stares at people. Money keeps flying out of your pocket as you don't get served.
I am also having this issue, and the resetting trick does NOT work for me.
I am having the issue with the not serving drinks, they start to make them then stop mid way through and reset. And they also will hang out for an our or two sim time, then they just up and leave. A new bartender will come in and do the same thing. Take drink order, take money, start to make it, stop, do this for awhile, then leave.
I also have the added problem that all my bar venues are FULL of children and teens, at all hours of the night. Hardly any adults to be seen. I've made a separate post about that, but I am mentioning it here incase its possible that it has anything to do with the bartenders not working.
