With the update they just did for off the grid goodies some of the lights still don't seem to have been properly checked.
Lights that *should* work off the grid but still don't:
*Rustic Candle Chandelier
*Barnyard Lamp
*No Fear Night Lantern - iffy on this one
*Weathered Lantern
*3 Senses Oil Lamp
Lights that *DO* work off the grid but are not labeled as such:
*Bow-tiful Candlelight
*Happy Holiday Floor Lanterns
*Candlelit Fall Leaves
*Candlelit Holly Branch
*Pine Fresh Candles
*Four Festive Candles, Ho, Ho, Ho!
*A Story of Three Candles
The off the grid trait and items are so inconsistent and not realistic. So many of the candles and lamps STILL don't work. I am really frustrated by the negative moodlets from washing your hands in one of the sinks that work off the grid, or from doing dishes.
1. a volcanic sink would not have 'warm-ish' water - I irl live on the grid and wash my hands in cold water most days and don't whine about it
2. Studies have shown cold water cleans dishes just as well as hot water!
3. The idea that a gas or wood stove limits you to grilled cheese sandwiches is ridiculous, many many of the recipes in the world (and those in the game) were invented pre-electricity and were cooked on gas or wood stoves and ovens - PLEASE expand the stove's menu.
It's kinda insulting to people who are living off the grid and in an eco friendly way to outright state that they're less clean, have less fulfilled lives and apparently only eat cereal, yoghurt and grilled hot dogs, burgers, chicken and steak. In real life my parents live off the grid and have propane gas delivered on a monthly basis. They have solar panels for electricity, a generator to charge the solar batteries when the sun isn't shining (filled with diesel gas), rainwater tanks and gas powered water heater and live perfectly 'normally'.

Honestly, I don't get why you can't use your stove to cook hamburgers, chicken, hot dogs, steaks, or any of those things. I assure you, that's how I cook mine. Pans work nicely for some things and the others like chicken cook well inside the oven. Anything you could cook on or in a stove oven can be cooked on a grill. My Dad used to make delicious melted sandwiches on the grill when we camped so I can't see why that'd be a problem.
Pans and pots work just as well on a grill, they might get a bit dirty from the smoke if fire is involved, but so what? I find them in the camping section all the time and people use just regular bon fires to do the cooking at times. Humans are meant to challenge their intelligence to get the results they want and if they want to cook some lobster they caught in a trap they don't necessarily need a stove oven to do it!
I also wash my hands in cold water despite having electricity and being "on the grid", and it doesn't bother me either. So a lot of this is rather unrealistic. Plus showering in hot water can damage your skin so I shower in luke warm water and I assure you it doesn't phase me or make me upset in the least. Hot water feels uncomfortable to me because I'm not used to it. So if someone is living off the grid, they'd be used to such temperatures and I'd expect them to be more miserable with hot water than cold.
Once, my brother thought it'd be amusing to shut off the hot water while I was taking a shower, thinking I'd scream, but I didn't because it didn't bother me and left him very confused. He likes to shower in hot water so for him it would've been shocking. I just thought I'd run out of hot water and it wasn't uncomfortable so I finished my shower, much to his dismay, in complete comfort. *laughs* He even put the hot water back on and shut it off a second time to no avail. When I came out he asked if anything weird happened and I shook my head no since I honestly hadn't caught on and he told me what he did. I was the one laughing. 😉 If I can go through that, I don't see why an off the grid sim couldn't and feel fine about it.
Back to food, like you said, the food of the world was cooked for centuries on open flames, grills, wood fire ovens or gas ones, etc. Heck, I love beans cooked in the oven with hot dogs laid on top. Humans are creative and cook in many different ways. Limiting us is a little insulting to our intelligence and creativity. New recipes can only come around when people try or do the unexpected!
Well, that's my full support and agreement post. Hope you enjoyed my brother's prank and my reaction at the very least. 😉

I so agree with the las two posts here. I just recently started to play 1 lot "Off The Grid" I had no idea how complicated it would be if you don't use cheats. The cleaning part "bad moodlets" is the most annoying part and so are all the lights which should work off the grid but do not! I believe that the developers have not thought this out before creating this. It is indeed insulting to the people who really live off the grid implying that those people are dirtier than the ones living in a house. That is indeed not so. I've seen several homes from people who had everything but the house was a total mess! You can tell that the developers haven’t done their homework right not have they really a slidest idea of what living off the grid is really like. People who live off the grid are no filthy people, infact they are cleaner than some others. I wish that EA would educate themselves more on the subject and fix all these flaws and wipe out the Bad Karma this off the grid thing (not correctly functional things) is giving the players.
