Not sure what you mean.
Isn't everything broken until you repair it ? Or do you mean replacing does not repair it ?

Scenario:
- Computer is not broken.
- Tell sim with high skill in handiness to salvage the computer for parts.
- Computer then switches to broken state as the sim begins to salvage parts, notification is displayed with amount of upgrade parts salvaged.
- Sim continues to salvage and obtains more parts. Sometimes the computer will flicker between broken state and normal, with the "broken" sound playing and trash piles heaping up around the sim's chair each time.
- The sim can then be told to stop salvaging, and the computer will remain in whatever state it was.
- The computer can then be repaired (if left broken) and function normally, after been salvaged for what could be limitless upgrade parts.
Normally salvaged items switch to broken state, then disappear from existance, leaving behind a trash pile nearby.
