RE: "The thought was that if I finished the setting with an arbitrary name, it might lose her role as Temperance."
I wanted to address your concern. I've edited both Temperance and Guidry in CAS over three separate saves. This was done to establish orientations/boundaries and likes/dislikes (they're sort of like family, these two).
I'd just added a full stop (.) after Temperance's name as she has no surname, and of course, we don't know it. It appears slightly strange but I'd grown used to it to a point at which it's hardly noticeable any more.
Guidry, I'd called (first) Claude René (surname) Duplantier. The name changes hadn't affected either of their roles as Paranormal Stuff NPCs. They've continued to function exactly as intended.
As for their causes of death..we can't be sure of those. I'd be willing to test my 'best guesses' from my Reaper's Rewards save and share the result, if any, of the additions. That's just one save, however. Ultimately, it's something I'm sure we'd like The Sims team to fix across all saved games.
Well, all simming and no sleep. I'll be testing CoD edits. 😉
EDIT: Too bad. I'd edited both Guidry and Temperance to give them both CoDs. My Reaper's save has now generated a second Guidry. I don't know if my sim can handle two Claude René Duplantier Guidrys, EA AHQ!
Meaning, I don't know if I can handle two of him. He's a chatty one.
DO NOT EDIT CAUSE OF DEATH, SIMMERS!!
RE-EDIT FOR CLARITY: ANY CHANGES MADE TO NPCs FROM PARANORMAL STUFF COULD POTENTIALLY BUG THEM OUT> See post by@nojedzto

Thank you for testing!
So there is a possibility that it could cause strange behavior. As you say, it would be wise not to edit the cause of death of NPCs who have a role.
As for the cause of death of Guidry and Temperance, it is a hint to the player, but I think that the story writer could make it clear. The additional part is for the team. I'm sorry if the text is difficult to understand.
The content you tested has been very useful.
Thank you.

I once added names to these ghosts and Bonehilda in cas and the game created new copies of them. Either way, these ghosts can always be deleted in case of an bug and the game will create new ones. However, in this case the ghosts seem to work correctly and the problem is only visual. In the case of Whikater, the ghost trait is removed due to an age conflict.
Any change to these sims from paranormal stuff may cause bugs or clones so it's better to delete them completely and get new sims. In this case, however, it won't help because the special traits of these ghosts have a visual problem. Hi there
I completely agree with your opinion.
This issue is only with Guidry and Temperance's visuals, but I think only the team and devs can fix it to the way the game is meant to be.
Thank you for sharing your experience and opinion. - 4 months ago
Thank you for posting this. I'll update my original post to reflect your experience with it. I suppose it's just chance then. I'd been able to edit all sorts on Temperance, Guidry and Bonehilda without setting off the bug which generates new ones. That didn't happen until I'd tried to add a CoD but it could very well have done with previous changes. Sheer dumb luck. Also, the save I'd tested had eventually generated a new Temperance, as well. I haven't touched Bonehilda again, and she remains as was.
So, in the end, any changes made to them are a risk. Meanwhile, the transparency issue is still troubling my games with Life & Death installed.
