I notice this happens sometimes with toilets as well -- a Sim will need to use the bathroom, and (if you auto-solve the bladder need or if they solve their own need autonomously), they often won't autonomously route to the nearest toilet. Oftentimes they'll trudge up/down multiple staircases to a totally different floor to use a different toilet, even though the nearest one is available. (And because they're Sims, sometimes they'll pee themselves on the way, all because they decided to take the scenic route. 🤦)
It happens the most if there's one of the talking toilets on the lot -- they seem to prefer that one. So I wondered if it has something to do with the quality of the toilet? Like, do they route to the most expensive/highest quality toilet or sink or whatever?
I haven't noted every instance to determine whether that's the pattern, but more often than not it seems that when they go out of their way to use a sink/toilet when there's a different one closer, it seems that what they're doing is opting for the "better" sink/toilet.
Has anyone else noticed that pattern?
I do think they’re routing to a better quality item even if there’s a similar (less quality) available.

I've not found that to be the case.
Every sink in my house is the same except for the kitchen sinks which are cheaper. Like everyone else, my sims will go up or down multiple floors to use a different sink in a different bathroom.
After reading through all 12 pages of reports about this bug, I'm just going to add my voice to the chorus. It's happening in base game. It's happening in the game with the various packs I own. I do not run any mods, nor have I used any cheats on this playthrough.
I have not tried cancelling the auto-created wash hands task and manually doing it... I'm going to see if that works. Even if it does work... I shouldn't have to do that.
**Edit**
Cancelling the auto-wash hands and manually doing it works... it's just a giant pain in the rear to do if you're running more than 1 or 2 sims. It's only a minor pain in the rear if you're running 1 sim. In any case, it's still a bug that really shouldn't still be going. It's been months and it's extremely easy to reproduce.- 3 years ago
I've also encountered this problem the past few days. It occurs to my sims about 90% of the time. The sinks in my house are all the same, so the price and quality doesn't matter. It's driving me crazy.
