It was mentioned that you went into build and buy mode. One of my sims were showering so I tried to move the shower and it vanished. So if you move anything while the glitch is happening the item will disappear but their animations will continue. By disappear the item is physically gone into a puff of smoke you don't get any money for the item back. After a few minutes the item will return to live mode.
