[OPEN] Child sims sometimes get stretched/adult animation when picking up violin

Product: The Sims 4
Platform:PC
Which language are you playing the game in? English
How often does the bug occur? Often (50% - 99%)
What is your current game version number? 1.97.62.1020
What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? Awesome Animal Hats, Cats & Dogs, Desert Luxe Kit, Holiday Celebration Pack, Life of the Party, Up All Night, City Living, Cool Kitchen Stuff, Dine Out, Discover University, Get to Work, Island Living, Seasons, Vampires, Vintage Glamour Stuff, Eco Lifestyle, Fitness Stuff, StrangerVille, Tiny Living Stuff, Get Famous, Get Together, Snowy Escape Expansion Pack, Dream Home Decorator Game Pack
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Have a child sim play a violin. If the bug doesn't occur, restart the game and try again, as there's a roughly 50% chance upon game start of the bug being present.
What happens when the bug occurs? The child sim gets stretched out, as if they're playing an animation that's rigged for an adult skeleton, when they pick up the violin. It then goes back to a child animation when they start playing music.
What do you expect to see? For the child sim to play a proper child animation.
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Not now. I've removed them.
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? Neutral/Not Sure

Note that while it says I've removed my mods but had them installed prior, I started a whole new "...\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims" folder. So it's an entirely clean save that hasn't been touched by mods.

For some reason the issue is randomly present or not upon startup. When it does occur it's 100% reproducible until I restart the game. If it's not present then it seems it's guaranteed to not happen again until the game restarts. I've found the chance of it happening on my PC to be roughly 50%, again only at launch.

  • @crinrictI think you're mistaking my thread for the one I linked in my second comment. Or is there a N.A.P. regarding violins or musical instruments? I have clean power production, eco-friendly appliances, fun-loving community and tech support. However on the fresh save I tested without mods there shouldn't have been any N.A.P.'s active as far as I know; I loaded into a new game, as if I had installed the game for the first time after formatting the PC, skipped Emily's tutorials and then created a household of a mother and her two children. I moved them into an empty lot and placed the four violins and tested two of them.

Remember that reproduction isn't 100% reliable and requires exiting back out to desktop and restarting the game if the bug doesn't happen. I'd imagine it should happen after 5 or so tries at most. Honestly though, I wouldn't be surprised if it's something specific to my system or to a group of individual systems with my knowledge of the game engine. I actually had a pathfinding bug start occurring about a few months ago due to reducing my CPU overclock; When I was discussing it on a modding forum I was told that the bizarre behaviour I was experiencing was due to the Python scripting engine being overloaded. So in the case of this violin animation bug it wouldn't surprise me if it's something to do with system performance or perhaps two different functions in code being executed in a different order each time.

Let me know if you're unable to reproduce the issue. Although I don't have another PC to test on, I could maybe run the game in a virtual machine and see if it behaves the same or if something is broken in my operating system.

@drift91king You said they were related so I wanted to double check if they could be.

If there's no NAP active and no deep listening happening then they are not related.

I can't try repro everything myself. I do this in my spare time so I sometimes ask questions to help narrow down stuff. I just wanted to double check if it's in fact any of the other two issues but if there's no NAP and no deep listening, then it's a separate issue.

  • I was originally going to post in the "deep listening" thread, glad I thought about it for a moment and made a separate thread then. For some reason I had myself convinced that they were likely the same root cause, but in hindsight that's probably unlikely.

Out of curiosity, what order of priority do bug reports get handled in? I'm assuming they're triaged in order of which have the most "Me Too" votes, but will ones with few votes get completely ignored or just take longer?

@drift91king That is up to EA to decide. Usually it's the more people have the issue and the more game breaking, the faster they try to fix it. Sometimes it's hard to replicate though or it causes conflicts with other things and then it can take longer to even find a fix.

So I guess the short answer is: It varies and depends on many factors.
  • I have this problem recently too but on Playstation. There's no deep listening queued like some suggest and I do not own the Eco Lifestyle pack on my PlayStation account so it can't be linked to that. My child seems just get tall while playing violin lol. Thought I would comment to say it's happening on PS too and that it's happening to people who don't have the NAP system 🙂 Hopefully this will get sorted at some point 🙂

  • Children will also stretch when there is an upgrade part on the ground and you use the 'put in inventory' action
