Today's patch may have fixed this issue. Is anyone still seeing this particular error after updating the game?

No, she was literally deleted. I was trying to move a whole family to a different save and I counted wrong because one of them was pregnant. I haven't tried to use another household since I don't want to lose the little bit of ability I have.
I had the same issue and my game was pretty much freshly installed. I had only played one family, a single sim that I had made, she had no pets. I had played her for about 30 minutes, then not touched the game until the Ranch expansion came out. I played a new family, one sim and a horse. No dogs or cats, no pets had ran away as far as I know. Then I tried to load the game the day after release and that's when I had the error. I followed your advice and loaded the other sim I had made, had no issues there, then transferred to my newer sim. Not had any problems since, and I've made a new family of one sim, a horse and a cat.
I have all expansions except for the first fits kit. One of the premade sim families may have had a pet run away, but I had only played the game for about 30 minutes after installing it, then played it for two hours on the ranch release day, so I'm not sure if a pet could have ran away in that time.
I had the same bug, which only showed up after I downloaded the new EP today. I played yesterday with just the patch and it was fine. Also, today the household loaded at first, but then I moved another sim in and created a dog in CAS - it was when I exited CAS that the bug appeared.
I tried a few things that didn't work (moving the sims out and back into the household, splitting the household and moving them into two lots, editing them in CAS, deleting the dog). Eventually I went into one of the two households in build and buy and made a few changes; for some reason, that then let me load into both households in live mode. The dog is still in the family - I exited without saving after that didn't work - so I don't think that alone was the problem.
