For me the cause is usually an enlarged decoration object that disappears another object, a door or a window. The objects go into the home inventory, doors and windows just disappear.
The items disappear when going from build to live mode and also when loading a saved game.
Enlarged plants are the worst offenders, they disappear enlarged paintings and doors so often that I have given up using them.
It seems that enlarged items keep their original footprint so objects that are placed within the englarged footprint dissapear. Eg: a one tile vase when enlarged still takes up one tile even though it show it takes up four tiles. Then when you place it close to a chair, save and then reload the chair will disappear but the enlarged vase will remain.

Originally, debug objects, such as fish ponds, did not transfer. They do now. Also, there indeed used to be a lot of instability with regard to enlarged and/or MOO'd objects staying in place, but that has greatly improved over time, to the point now where most objects will be preserved even if lots are placed with bb.moveobjects off.
