Does it work for other familes ? Another fresh game ?
It does work on a newly created household. Considering that I've had numerous issues with this save I think I'm going to cut my losses and just load a new game. I mainly wanted to post the issue because it was a new one that I hadn't encountered before, but I'm going to hope it was an anomaly that won't crop up again.
I'm going to provisionally mark this off as solved, but if the issue reoccurs I'll be back to update. Unfortunatley with random glitches in a program this complex, it's often impossible to unravel all of the factors tha tmay have caused it.

Did you delete the broken save game or do you still have it ?
If you still have it, you're welcome to upload to a file sharing site and PM me the link. I can forward it to EA so maybe the can take a look.
