Play the one you DON’T want to harvest the plants. Make sure the one you DO want is one of the staff on duty. They’ll usually be at the receptionist desk.
Have your active Sim leave work early.
When they get home, switch household or character to one you want. They will still be at Lab.
You can go into build mode and add a bed if you like. (I tweak mine a lot, adding unbreakable computers, refrigerators, more toilets etc.
Have the Sim hang around. They can experiment, use any of the facilities, go to sleep whatever. Then when 5am comes around they can harvest the plants.
The only drawback is that Sim can’t travel home. The best way to get them home is, if they’re in same household, switch to other member and bring them home. Or if different household, save the game, go to manage worlds, choose another household. Usually when you switch back to that household they are at home.
You can also try walking to road and travel that way.
As for watering plants, plant a new one and water it if none need watering. I usually extend the closed in area and add more pots. You can also buy any seeds in Build mode. Put them on ground then open them.

@queenofsprinkles If they really wanted to put in the effort, which let's be honest this is EA we're talking about and I'm not sure they like effort unless there's money involved, I'm sure they could implement some sort of script that would force the plants to produce whenever the lot is loaded. Then again knowing EA, instead of making a script exclusive to the science lab they would somehow mess up gardening in general. I mean it wouldn't be the first time, because they really seem to love messing up gardening. I'm genuinely surprised all my plants haven't reverted to piles of dirt, then again some did after trying to move them...
My current sim is in the science career, and it's been nothing but annoying. In order to achieve some of the daily work goals, I created a basement at my sim's house and turned it into a garden that grows only the plants specifically needed for serums. My inventory is flooded with junk as well, which is rather annoying. This pack really could have used a better way to store work related items instead of throwing it all in your character's personal inventory. If you ask me the science lab should have had its own unique storage container to keep things in, like plants and crystals and whatnot, then allow things like the chemical analyzer and chemistry lab to pull items straight from that storage.
Oh and speaking of the chemistry lab, it's bugged as well. There seems to be a thread about that already, so I won't bother going into details here. Not sure I'll comment there though, because frankly I'm getting a little tired of having to comment on every single problem in this game. But I guess as long as there are workaround EA doesn't care... unfortunately some players also don't care which is a shame. Well luckily us console users have access to mods to help with things... oh wait... we don't... hooray??
- 3 years ago@valohim666 Agreed on all accounts. It's so frustrating because the gardening is by far one of the most fun parts of the game to me (I'm a bit of a farming sim addict) and it is just so broken. Maybe it'll work in Sims 5...maybe. ☹️

@queenofsprinkles Gardening is something I do on almost all of my sims, so to see it almost always messed up in some way is certainly frustrating. I mean pretty much every sim in my current save has some sort of garden, though as much as I like it the problems always make me want to just give up on it and not bother. I'd give my thoughts on a potential Sims 5, but I don't think I want to share that because 1) EA wouldn't like the words I would use and 2) it would be a LONG rant that I'm sure no one would want to read. Let's just say I have little to no confidence in a Sims 5 and I will not be playing it unless they put it on Game Pass.

Im done with the Sims 4 until the next one comes out, which should be pretty soon. They already put up Sims 4 for free, which is a sign that they are getting ready to release a new game. So we might as well close this issue and forget all about the misery that was Sims 4. There were some good times, but they were not good enough considering the premium they charged for everything. And then the end-customer receives a mediocre experience at best, that's often broken. Remember Vampires? How broken was that one. I remember resetting countless hours of gameplay, just because my Sim couldn't read a vampire book.
This is a 2018 bug that, more than 1.000 people have actively gone out of their way, to go online, find this thread, and post about it. I mean, how sad is that and how sad is this forum? Which bugs do they fix if not the ones most commonly reported? Oh, that's right, they only focus on new DLCs and fixing base game bugs that might break the DLC. To be honest, the pirate version of the Sims 4 was much better, because you had completely disconnected shop and stuff and you had less lag and the game just ran better in general. That's how we need to show our support for EA on their next Sims game.

Yeah, I noticed this in my game too. I had even tried planting somethings outside to see if they would produce. No luck on that, had the inventing machine glitch too...
