I hadn't deleted the file but I have now, and repaired the game. No change to the current save file but when i start a new one, it's fine. Does this mean I have to abandon my current save? It's every fridge in that save.

I'm not sure if you sent your save to crinrict yet or not or if you two have found the cause on this problem, but I wanted to ask a few questions so I can see if this problem is similar to what we've seen in our games.  If it is similar, I might have a workaround or even fix so you don't lose any progress in your save or have to revert far far back.  I'd need to know a little more though first otherwise it might have nothing to do with the issue you're experiencing.  Soo, the questions are:

Is the problem on your home lot or a community/public or business type lot?

If it's on your home lot, before you removed your mods, had you been using any mods that allowed you to run a business at that home (like retail, club, or whatever).

If it's on your home lot, is your lot type set to a residential type? 

Have you noticed any issues like this with other items on your lot that have certain options either greyed out or not working for some reason?   Like if you place a brand new beach towel on your lot (not one that you already owned previously) and clicked on it while it's on the ground is the option "Put in inventory" greyed out with a message saying your sim doesn't own that item?

The issue you described sounds like an ownership issue.   Item ownership and the limits caused by it when the game thinks an item isn't owned by your sim can be odd and sometimes buggy..  You may not have noticed issues with other items since most wouldn't be too obvious.   Fridges are one of the more obvious items affected since it restricts how you can put food in the fridge (can't drag to the fridge even when you've opened it).     Until the issues is figured out and fixed you probably can put the food in the fridge by selecting the food and choosing "Put Away" instead of dragging it to the fridge.     I hope that workaround helps for now and I'll check back on this topic to see what you say about the issue and lot type.
