I started playing the sims 4 fairly recently, and my main household is a merman. I still get stuck with the dried scales moodlet, and one of the easiest ways to work around the bug is to enter CAS. I don't use cheats to make the game easier, but I have used CAS.fulleditmode to remove the moodlet. I jump around with different aspirations for satisfaction points, and every merfolk household ends up developing multiple traits. 

I noticed in larger households that the bonus traits are added to every sim in the household.

I always thought it had something to do with some kind of hidden mechanic. Aside from that, my merfolk households are also extremely buggy with the Eco Living NAPs. 

I recently created a new household without cheats active. No new bonus traits are being added to my sim. I am a little upset about losing the parenthood traits after creating a new sim. If I cheat, it will be to add those traits I worked for back. 

Aside from cas.fulleditmode, I'm thinking that uploading sims from the gallery could be a factor. The Gallery Saves all of a sim's traits. Maybe, it saves hidden and bonus traits too.

I am constantly cycling through the Aspirations because I like to hide Whims and this is the only way for points.

And well, I didn't know it was a bug, just a real nusience. But Bug or Not, this has been happening since the very early days, since this matter has never been attended too, more and more I presume it was like some feature.
