Re: [ARCHIVED] [PS4] Scrolling too fast randomly

I had the same problem with my Sims 4 on PS4. When socialising with a Sim and I try to click get to know, it just jumps to another stuff. There's lot of bugs in the game like missing cursor to cursor moving fast.

    Hello All,

We have not been able to repro this issue on our end,

If anyone of you are still encountering this on the latest game version (without mods), would you be willing to share your save file(s)?

If so, please send me a private message with a link to the file.

    Instructions here: http://x.ea.com/74420

    Thanks!

  • This issue is still happening (ps4). It should be clarified that it is not a cursor issue, but a selection issue; that is, the "mouse cursor" that has free movement around the screen is unaffected, which means that the cursor speed settings have no effect. The issue only affects the selection cursor that is bound to menus; sometimes you can get around the problem by switching to the free cursor to select the thing you want, such as selecting a Live Mode menu, but once those menus are open it switches to the selection cursor, and pressing the touchpad to switch back to free cursor closes the menus. I think the issue could be fixed fairly easily by allowing us to switch to the free cursor without closing the open menus.

To properly describe the issue that is happening, since it is somewhat hard to understand from the descriptions that other people have given: occassionally, the selection highlight while navigating menus will begin moving rapidly, as though the player is holding a directional button, even when only briefly tapping the button. The movement itself is not random, it still only moves in the direction that the player is pushing, but at a very high speed, often scrolling from the beginning of the menu to the end with only one button press. This makes it incredibly difficult to navigate the menus, as it often will skip over all the options in the middle. The selection highlight still only moves when a button is pressed (so those people in this thread who have stated that it endlessly scrolls with no input are describing a completely different, but possibly still related, bug).

As other players have stated, the bug generally fixes itself if you simply do not provide any input on the controller for a few minutes, however the wait time varies; sometimes it can be as little as 30 seconds, other times it might take an hour or more. It affects every single menu with a selection highlight: pie menu, BB menus, pause menu, game options menu, inventories, purchase screens, colour swatch selection, CAS menus (identity, clothes, body, even the household tray), and selecting the Live Mode menus when not using the free cursor. It affects both the directional buttons (d-pad) and the left thumbstick/accelerometer, but does not appear to affect any other buttons on the controller. switching your controller off and back on does not fix the problem, nor does switching to a different controller, indicating that it is indeed a software issue rather than a hardware issue. i have also received unconfirmed reports from friends that it affects xbox one and xbox series consoles, but do not own either of those so cannot test it myself.

I have found that, when the issue occurs, if I do not have the time or patience to wait for the bug to resolve itself, I can use the left stick rather than the directional buttons to navigate the menus, because while the stick still has the same issue, I can simply lightly flick the left stick to move the selection highlight very slightly; I assume this is due to the left stick being an accelerometer rather than a simple button input. This is still not a guaranteed fix, and I would rather not have to worry about this issue at all. The bug has existed on ps4 since the game was released for this platform, and has seemingly only gotten worse over the years. You claim not to be able to reproduce the bug, but if you are actually testing on a ps4 (like any self-respecting bug hunter should) then there is no way you have not encountered it at least once since it was first reported. The bug is very frustrating, and sometimes prevents you from even being able to save the game, which can put players at risk of losing progress. I think its about time this gets fixed, as it is one of the oldest and most annoying bugs on the ps4 version of the game.

I can think of two fairly simple solutions to this bug, other than actually finding the cause of the bug and fixing it:

    1. Allow players to use the touchpad to switch to the free cursor without closing the currently open menu
    2. Prevent scrolling through menus entirely, instead requiring the player to navigate the options one-by-one. obviously this would make menu navigation a bit slower, but it would be preferable (in my opinion) to the alternative of having to deal with this bug.

Also, I would like to clarify that this bug cannot easily be reproduced on purpose; it just randomly occurs. there is no specific set of circumstances leading up to the bug, and its timing is completely unpredictable. some players have suggested that it may occur when you make too many inputs in a short amount of time, as though it is a lag-related problem, however the cursor does not freeze before the issue begins, and it does not seem like a "system having to catch up" sort of glitch, as it occurs with continual inputs rather than repeating old inputs. it also seems to happen more often (for me at least) after not touching the controller for some time, and is fixed only after once again not touching the controller for some time, or if the game happens to have a severe lag spike while the issue is present.

I do not have any images or videos of the glitch occurring currently, but I will attempt to acquire some the next time I experience the issue. I will also try to share my save file if I can the next time it occurs.

I currently own all DLC Packs except My Wedding Stories, and own only a few of the DLC Kits (unsure which ones at the moment, but I will look when I get a chance and edit this). I am on the most recent update (version 1.85, last updated 14/12/2023 at 18:52 EST).

You're not trying hard enough. It doesn't happen right away. If you spend enough time in build mode, it might occasionally happen, it lasts for a while and then might go away just as suddenly as it appeared. Everything else works just fine, just scrolling through items is impossible. It happens in live mode too when choosing an action, but not nearly as often and it doesn't hamper gameplay as much since you can still hit the analog stick in the right direction on the dial with enough precision. With D-pad it goes all over the place.
