I had the same problem today. I uninstalled the game in April this year and have not played since then. Because I was excited about the new pack (For Rent), I purchased every single DLC for the game and installed the whole thing. I always keep a backup of my old save. so when I loaded up the game, I noticed I have around 5 worlds duplicated! Here is what I did to fix the problem:
1- I completely removed the TS4 folder from my documents.
2- Repaired the game
3- Opened the game to check that the worlds were not duplicated, which they were not.
4- Deleted the newly made TS4 folder and replaced it with my backed-up TS4 folder
5- I removed the Mods folder from TS4 folder to desktop
6- Repaired the game, and this time both save and tray will be repaired. When I started the game, there were no duplicate worlds
7- I added back my Mods folder to the TS4 folder in my documents and started the game. Thankfully no duplicate worlds.
So in short, it is advisable before installing a new pack or maybe a patch to repair the game with your TS4 folder and save file present in my documents folder. Only remove the mods folder. I think the repair does something to the save file, tray, and the Sims 4 folder.
Always backup the whole Sims 4 folder before a patch or pack and also freshly after you install the pack and test that everything seems to be in order (BEFORE PLAYING).
I will do the same before installing For Rent.
