so one playthrough i came across a familiar face. i was out on the sidewalk in front of my house, and would you look at that, there was a guy with the exact same name, face, clothes, traits as me... ...

Do you still have the Sim in your library ?
Does he have the same job and everything your Sim has acquired after you started playing him or is he like the first time you put yours in the game ?
he is a sim i have saved in my library.
but i was self-employed working fom home. so i had no career. i can only assume he didn't have one either.
i can't go back and view the game save, because it was present on an "unnamed" save many saves ago, and has thus been overwritten... dumb issue to have on a pc game if you ask me.
Sims 3 had this issue where Sims from the library where just randomly put in the game. They were not the same Sims and didn't pose a problem as such. Only way to prevent was to take them out of the library.
I'll add I think for the gurus to ponder.
