For me the biggest most frustrating lag and one that doesn't seem to be getting fixed is Sims doing a lot of Standing around, for example; send a sim to the fridge, get a serving out go and sit down, in the game this takes a good few hours for the Sim to do, they go to the fridge get the serving out, stand there for ages, walk to the table place the food on the table, stand there for ages before sitting down, its not smooth, one action to the next.
This lag is becoming so annoying and frustrating for me personally it is actually making me not want to play the game anymore until the issue is fixed.

Thank you @catwoman2005 for your earlier save. We are aware of the issue and are investigating.

I have the same issue. It seems to happen when their is a lot of people in one place such as festival! even when i visit bigger lots than 20x15 it seems to lag so much!

This is really ruining the game. The game is great, minus this. I can't enjoy the game because of this. With this I mean the standing around bobbing head and not doing anything at all. It used to be less but now I just want it all gone, not lessened.

I saw this sort of thing when my Sims were living on an enormous lot in a huge house with tons of stuff, though not quite to the extreme some people are having, but I definitely was noticing a delay between actions. Whenever I would take these Sims elsewhere there was no lag at all. I ended up moving them to a different house (still within the same save) and now I have very little lag again.
I suspect that it may just be the game becoming more demanding on CPU and RAM the more packs and patches get released. I would recommend anyone having this issue to try moving your family to a smaller lot and see how it goes. It worked for me, the difference is huge. Though, if you're already playing on a small lot and having the problem still, maybe post your DxDiag so techy people can let you know if something in your hardware is not quite adequate for the game. I'm not saying the lag is definitely a PC issue, but it doesn't hurt to rule it out.

The bigger the houses and the more stuff you have, the more possibilities for the game to have to calculate. It's a bit like when you have 10 things you could do right now and don't know which you prefer. So they stand around pondering what to do until they do it.
Better computers can calculate bigger lots.
So, my recommendation for this: Reduce your things. Reduce inventory items, reduce items you can do stuff with (I mean I've seen houses that have like 10 work-out machines - why do you need this in a household of 2) ? Houses like this might look nice but often the playability is reduced.
Also reduce the use of moo and if you have a lower end computer, play on smaller houses.

Your suggestion is pretty much to hollow out the essence of the game in order to be able to "enjoy" it.
