I pushed the board room doors open aggressively when all the members there all seemed to have an exact same look on their face. Relief.
“Beth, could you get me a tea love?” I asked my personal assistant who stood up immediately from the corner.
“Yes Mr Hyatt, right away…” she said obediently. I sat at the end of the table and remained quiet for a moment before one of the elders spoke first.

His name was David and he was a snobbish old man. He loved power, money and being in charge. There were many occasions I wanted to fire him, but he was actually one of dad’s nearest friends … so I didn’t have the heart to do it. The topic of conversation was mainly about owners and business in Australia. I nodded along while he spoke slightly swinging on my chair and taking in as much as I could from his endless rambling.
My brain just could not compute this right now.
But what did catch my eye was a pretty young woman two seats down from me that I had not seen before.

She was dressed all business like and coyly smiled when I looked her way. I squinted my eyes for a moment to look at her once more whilst I heard the zip of her nylons as her thighs crossed one another. She was beautiful and I knew we were having a moment.

I found myself in a little bit of a trance before I was interrupted,
“Mr Hyatt?” David asked.
“Pardon me?” I said glaring at him. He cleared his voice and gave me a disappointed look. I knew he thought he was more superior than I was, and I was just another young CEO that didn’t deserve it. But I was honestly doing the best I could with how I felt for the last three months since I had lost my father. Every step I took and every decision I made, I had a feeling I was judged. Not by these people … but my dad.
Was I doing the right thing? Was I even doing his legacy proud?
“Ahem, respectfully sir, the board members and I have all united and wanted to discuss a few personal matters.” He said awkwardly before I gave him a questioning look. David looked around nervously before other members gave him a nod as if to continue. “Well we know it has been a difficult three months for you and the Hyatt family and we have picked up the slack together to establish great business and patronage here…”
“Rigggght…” I said sarcastically before I knew what was coming. He was about to go into my personal life. It infuriated me before he even spoke and I was beginning lose my cool.
“We are just concerned that your personal life might be effecting your position and overall image for Hyatt hotels. Your father was an upstanding man who …” I put my finger up and shushed him and he completely stopped in his tracks.

“Now I’m going to stop you right there.” I said getting up from my seat. I paced the room at first as I tried to calm my nerves. “Now… My personal life has nothing to do with you or anyone else in this room for that matter. And I have checked the books constantly in the last three months and my management has not changed the amount of guests we get here at the hotel or any hotel for that matter. Publically yes … I do date some popular celebrities that may gain some media attention, but honestly David what I do in my personal time is no one’s business but my own. In fact I feel very insulted that you would bring this up. I certainly don’t bring up your personal life….” I said pinching the back of his chair.
“Oh I’m sorry Mr Hyatt. It’s just that we have had contact with media that want to do interviews with you. I just assumed this bad press could possibly be bad for The Hyatt …”
“I’ve dealt with bad press before, and they will write what they want with or without my interviews. I’m not a bloody celebrity here…”
“Yes sir…” David said lowering his head.

“Now let us go on…” I said more awake than before and feeling a little more tense and ready to get into action. Sometimes it was things like this that gave me the kick in the pants I needed to be the boss that I was appointed to be. I just didn’t need some guy who worked at the Hyatt longer than I did to make me look like a fool.
