Maybe it's this way because they want you to have the option to pick what to use for fertilizer? The item and the quality? I don't know. The option would be convenient, but one would have to be careful not to have, say, a cowberry seed or something you don't want to lose in inventory. Auto-fertilize might pick ANYTHING.
