Birthday Week, a Cantrell Chronicles Reset update (Technically, Part Two- Chapter Thirty-Nine
[Meanwhile back in Ondarion...]
“Erik, I’m okay.” Came the voice of his younger sister. Erik threw off the covers and sat upright. “Bree, is that you?” Rubbing the sleep out of his eyes, he soon realized not only had she been in his head, but he’d also overslept. Besides, the fact that this was Sunday, and he had taken over as the choir director for his father, which meant arriving slightly ahead of time for services; it was the beginning of Birthday Week! “Kayleigh,” he said, rocking her back and forth to help shake her from the sound sleep she was in. “Come on, we’ve overslept.”
Despite it all, the four youths got up, dressed and out the door to church in record time. Queen Kayleigh helped King Erik ready the music books for the correct Troparion of the day and then waited for the service to begin. The Choir, as usual, was great, for which the young monarch thanked them.
Instead of staying afterward to enjoy a bite to eat and consume coffee with their Church Family, the four headed off to the Oak Alcove Pizzeria in Brindleton Bay. Princes Reginald and James joined them. As soon as they were shown to their table the king asked that a chocolate cake be brought out.
Once it arrived, he was quick to place birthday candles on it, and gently shoved it toward his older brother, Aaron. “Happy Birthday, big brother, just don’t let it go to your head.”
“Don’t forget to make a wish,” Joey said.
“Listen, you two, I do know how to do this.”
The candles out, Aaron spun around like a pro.
“I suppose since I ordered it, I should eat it.” Aaron stared down at the plate of food the server had delivered. “Sure wished it looked better. Anybody up for cake?”

After making sure they had properly celebrated Aaron’s arrival into young adulthood, they returned to Castle Cantrell in the late afternoon. Erik soon found himself rushing around again. Wondering aloud, “Once your day starts off late, do you ever catch up?” He was beginning to think not. He freshened up, glad for Alfred’s help as he dressed. This was the First Sunday of Spring, the Quaver 2278. His song Falling Apart, which seemed oddly apropos, was one of those nominated.
What Erik couldn’t understand, since this wasn’t his first time, is why he was so very nervous. Too much pressure to perform? Did so many think he was a shoo-in for a third Clean Sweep? That was the talk of the tabloids. I’ve got to stop reading them. Ready, at last, Erik went to gather his bride. “Kayleigh, we’ve got to go. I can’t afford to be late to this. — Wow, would you look at you. Honey, you really rock that dress.”

Erik was getting accustomed to being greeted, even in Del Sol Valley, with a salute. In fact, he was certain he would miss it.
Once they got settled into front row seats, time seemed to catch up with itself. The host took the stage to expedite things. “Good Spring evening, isn’t the weather great? I am Cliff Gupta, your host for tonight. Here we are with this year’s Quaver. Best Song of the Year.”
“The nominees for tonight are, Trevor Holland for his Matching Suits; Marc Winthrop for his Dueling Careers; Misty Roads for her Shadow Boxing; Caronline Walters for Irish Coffee at Noon; and the odds-on favorite, His Majesty Erik Cantrell for his Falling Apart.”
“Without further ado,” he said, taking the envelope from the silver platter. He blew into the pre-slit envelope and gently shook the gray-blue cardstock out of its wrapping. “And the winner is . . . drumroll, please. Erik Cantrell for his Falling Apart! Yes, yes, yes!”
“Thank you so very much. I was sweating bullets to be perfectly honest. All those other songs — I’ve got them on my play list. Truly fine listening. I’m honored to be included amongst such noble and talented musicians.”
"Once again, I thank the Academy for the nomination, to the Council, who decides the winner with their votes. My thanks to all of my fans worldwide. To my family, who supports me in their own unique way, each of them. And to my darling wife, my queen, my best friend on the face of this Earth, who puts up with me. Honey, this is for you.”
“Erik, we love you!” fans cried out from the audience.
“And right back at you!”
“What a great night this is, what an honor to be here. Thank you again and goodnight, everybody!”
I see how you approached this from different view what happened to Bree and Spock.
Tho I must say, if not familiar with original Star Trek at all, this could be bit hard to get in to.. I am familiar with it,, as you by now may know, but just saying 🙂
Thank you. There is more to come. I did start off with King Erik receiving information via Father James, that would possibly show from Bree's perspective just what happened during her Test. Taking the actual chapters from my published Star Trek Fan Fiction, as I did the first time, could be considered spamming on this site. So, I opted for a different take on it. I had hoped I could make it plain enough for those who aren't familiar. I did lay the foundation for such, or so I thought in the previous chapter, Into the Unknown. One reason I wanted to change things up a bit, is I lost many readers, after I went from Bree's story, back to Erik's. Must have been the Sci-Fi fans. If I end up revising, I will simply install the new one over the old, I just haven't made up my mind, quite yet. I appreciate the critique, all the same.
