IDIC, a Cantrell: The Early Years, Part Four Update Brianna gazed out of the viewport, feeling the thrum of the engine beneath her booted feet. “It’s so dark,” she said as the space skiff landed ...
“No, Jim, she has simply passed out. No doubt being hung upside down for as long as she was. That and the sheer terror that afflicted her.”
“Thank God.” Kirk leaned over, resting his hands on his thighs.
“Amen.” Spock returned. Climbing up the short stairs, he gently gathered up his betrothed and carried her back into the lab. Kirk, Scotty and McCoy followed.
Leaning over her, McCoy waved a pungent tablet under her nose. Brianna furiously waved her hand under her nose, trying to dispel the noxious scent. Her lashes fluttered and she opened her eyes. “Welcome back, Lieutenant,” he said, smiling widely at her. “For a moment we thought we had lost you.”
“You can’t keep a Cantrell down that easily,” she said, a small smirk on her pretty face. “Or, at least that’s what my father always says.”
Struggling to sit upright, Brianna quickly took to her feet. “I have to make more vaccines. Captain Kirk, I’m so sorry. I screwed up. I don’t know what made me think the four of us could take on that beast. I need to have all of us, sir. I’ll just get to work on the vaccines.”
Again, she had several more vaccines ready in just a few minutes. While she worked, Chekov, Sulu and Uhura joined the group. Brianna made haste to inoculate the newcomers, recruiting them into service. Then she gave an additional dose to Scotty, Kirk and Spock.
The crew headed back to what they called the arena. Fortified they were truly ready to take on this cosmic menace. Again, Brianna instructed them to encircle the beast, doing their best to manage any gaps in their offense. “Oh, and watch out for the infected ones. I noticed last time, as our fight ensued some were coming in through the doors, ready to disrupt the battle. Be on your guard,” she instructed.
Taking her position once again, on the platform, it was all she could do to keep from making a rude face at the monster. You’re not six years old. She admonished herself.
Never claimed to be came Spock’s response. Gazing down at him, he saluted her ever so briefly. Or were you conversing with yourself again, only silently this time.
Did I ever mention you’re a lot like my brothers. Must be a male thing, eh?
“On my mark!” she said, aloud, “Fire!”
Gazing up at the beast, Brianna muttered under her breath, "Don't you even think about it."
Brianna again, watched the level of infection. Looking good, she called for an all-out attack. She lobbed another vaccine container at the beast. “Captain Kirk, to your left, watch out!” Turning, he did hand-to-hand battle with an infected person. Doing a double take, he could swear this was one of their neighbors. “I don’t want to hurt you,” he said.
As the squad wielded a furious assault, for several minutes more, Brianna lobbed yet another vaccine at the mother of all plants. This time the entity seemed to burst into a cloud of blue haze. Shrinking back into her hole. At long last, it was over. Exhausted, sweaty, she longed to get back to their home base.
Brianna was quick to throw confetti into the air. The waking nightmare was finally over. They won the final battle.
Exhausted but gleeful for a battle well executed, the Enterprise crew made their way back into the lab. They turned left at the analyzer and continued up the four flights of stairs. “I could use a nice, tender steak after that,” Kirk said.
“I was thinking a nice bottle of Van Haute Estate Meloire to accompany such. Do you think they have it here?” Brianna said. “And maybe, I can have a nice bath with soaks, --- sans the vines this time. I hurt in places I didn’t even know existed.”
“I'm not surprised. You took a nasty fall,” McCoy said.
Captain’s Log: I recommend awards of valor to be conferred upon the following personnel: Captain Spock, Commanders McCoy and Scotty, Uhura, Sulu and Chekov. Along with the award of valor, I am also conferring a battlefield promotion to Lieutenant, J.G. Cantrell to full Lieutenant for her meritorious actions in the heat of battle. End of log. Captain James T. Kirk.
Thanks for reading! This is the end of Part Four. Next on to Part Five.
Thank you. Atta boys, as my hubby calls them, are important for the underlings in any job. Not only that, but Brianna thought she was going to meet her death. Phew, so glad she's okay.
Thank you so much. I'm glad you found it so. I recall seeing an episode of TOS, once which found Kirk dictating actions of his crew commending them for their performance.
Well done team on defeating Mother and rescuing all the individuals infected by her. Congratulations on the awards and on Brianna’s promotion, all well deserved! And thank you GalacticGal on defeating your WiFi and lost draft! I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.
