In all honesty, I'm completely baffled as to why direct control was not implemented on day one of the console versions. It would make things so much smoother in terms of actual live mode gameplay. It should be a requirement for console editions of the game. The way first person mode works right now is so much more clunky in comparison to it, which is a shame.
