Chapter 2: This might work
Chandler and Julie Ellicott could afford any house in Willow Creek, but they lived in the Foundry Creek home they'd bought when Beth was a Toddler. A few of Julie's paintings highlighted their pleasant, somewhat eclectic decor.
Beth still occupied her childhood bedroom, too. It had undergone several redecorations over the years, but when she awakened each morning, she could look out her window at the view across the creek that she'd seen as a girl.
Honestly, Chandler and Julie hadn't thought they'd still have their daughter in the bedroom beside theirs. They figured she would first move into a dorm at UBrite or Foxbury, and perhaps from there to a flat in San Myshuno or a shared house in Newcrest. They loved having Beth at home, but all three of them found themselves wishing things were different sometimes.
The evening after Beth made her list, she sat down with her parents to explain her plan.
This might work..."This won't be easy," Chandler told his daughter. "Even if you begin with some talent, it takes a lot of time and hard work to develop it."
"That's a job itself," Julie added. "Especially when you're trying to maximize several talents at once."
Beth nodded. She'd never been afraid of work; she simply hadn't found any one thing she wanted to work hard at for a very long time. Working on several possibilities at once seemed to energize her.
Chandler thought for a moment. "You know, you're going to need more room than you have here, sweetheart."
Beth's face fell. "I know. That's the one thing I can't seem to figure out."
Julie looked over at her husband, and Chandler winked back. "I think Dad and I have already figured it out...haven't we?"
The Ellicotts actually owned two houses in Willow Creek. Several years ago, Chandler and Julie had purchased a property on Courtyard Lane that needed a lot of TLC. They fixed it up, and they'd been renting it to an older couple until several weeks ago. Now their tenants were living in Tartosa, and they had a solution to Beth's problem. Beth would "rent" the house from her parents. Chandler and Julie would have to keep paying the taxes on the house for a while, but Beth would be sharing the proceeds from her "independent contracting" for a while. They didn't work out the details; this was family, after all.
As Beth relaxed in her bed that night, she thought about her plan. It was scary and exciting and impulsive and energizing, and it felt right.
Yeah, this might work.
I hope that Beth will enjoy living in her new home, and that she will go well as she starts her new career 🙂
