Having an NPC in your household without having to control them!

I really like controlling only one sim but I still want my sim's spouse to move in with them. Can there PLEASE be some way to have them in my household without having to control them?

Simply not instructing/selecting them isn't plausible solution? Or do Sims AI that screwed?
