Instead of a University Pack ...

In this day and age, it's more and more difficult for a college/university graduate to find jobs, partially because many jobs are becoming more and more obsolete, and also because many degrees offered from a school aren't going to help you find a job at all. Not only that, quite a few universities, especially in the West, have been requiring courses that ... well ... don't even contribute to the major/field of study of the student. Plus, there are many careers that don't require a degree at all, even though society often demands that people get degrees anyway. Journalism in this day and age only requires a camera phone and an Internet connection! You don't even need a business degree to run a business, either. Why bother with a degree? And don't get me started on the current political climate involved with schools. That's a can of worms we don't need to go into too much detail about.

Basically, what I'm asking, is that in this day and age, in a life simulation game, how would a university pack work without being cruel? Would it make sense? Could it be done in a way that reflects real life (to a certain extent) while being challenging, without being brutally unfair?

What if, instead of a pack based on university, we could have an "Education" Pack? Yes, your sim could go to a university, but on a smaller scale, so that the developers could focus on other areas of education? Apprentices, updating the schools for children and teens, self-education for adults on the Internet (it's cheaper to purchase copies of classical literature than take a course on it), vocational schools, trade schools, etc. Maybe your sim could even start up their own private school, or their own private online school. It's just something I've been thinking of lately.

Thanks for reading.

If an EDUCATION pack could also give us the option of being the teacher/professor then that would be even better. I'd love to play a college professor who explores Selvadorada on his off time.

@Dannydanbo I'm with you. I also think it would be kewl if only certain levels of certain jobs required a uni degree.

I actually like this idea. I do feel like it's time for kids and teens to get some attention in the education department too.

I suppose you have a good point about STEM careers and other similar careers. When it comes to liberal arts, though, perhaps the sims shouldn't go to school to pursue those sorts of degrees, since those degrees aren't exactly useful? That's just what I've noticed, though. Goodness, many teaching jobs are actually becoming obsolete, which is sad and unfortunate, but also true.

If you want to become an artist, you maybe are right - if you want to work in the "art industry" wether it is the music business or you want to work for a publisher or in the film industry, then you have to have some kind of diploma for almost every job.
Yeah, I know about the famous people who all worked her way up, but reality is different and for one famous person without any education at all, there are thousands with degrees working silently everyday around them with degrees.
I work as an editor and I without my university education I wouldn't have had this job and everyone I work with has some kind of degree. It was important and it always will be important, because apart from the actual education your diploma tells your potential employer something about yourself: you can hang on even if it gets difficult or uninteresting and you can deal with timelines and deadlines, because that is what you lern in college and university, too apart from all the other stuff that may or not may not be useful. :)

But anyway, in Sims I would love to have a combined education pack. Universities, colleges, boarding schools, community colleges and online classes. I would love to see a graduation and I would love to be able to build an actual school (of any kind) ingame.

I hope I'm not being rude, but this is what I've been led to believe. If you want to actually make a film, no degree is required. You just need the equipment and time to make the film. When it comes to making any kind of art, whether it be film, music, books, or anything, no degree is required. Other jobs involved in these industries might require degrees, depending on the exact job, though. I agree. However, I didn't really know one needed to have a degree in anything to be an editor. Maybe it's because when I did that sort of work, I mostly did freelance stuff online, and I didn't work for an official company? I've also heard that the main reason why some employers want workers with degrees is because they sometimes think that separates the "riff raff" from the "good" people. However, I've had quite a few employers who look at a degree and say, "that's a dime a dozen" or even "why did you go to school for that? this won't get you a job at a fast food place." And as for learning about timelines and deadlines ... well ... at least where I live, middle school kids learn all that long before they even think of college. I guess it all depends on too many factors, really.

Hmmmm, maybe I'm being too off topic, or maybe I'm being too argumentative. I'm terribly sorry if I am. I guess I'm just too opinionated sometimes.

I'm currently wondering if it would be possible to have sims in general judge you (of course, adding or removing the friendship points) when you mention your degree (if you get one). Maybe some degrees would have social stigma attached to them? But maybe that would turn out to be too cruel to the player?
  • Well here's an idea very young genius (ie children) could attend university as can under 18 year olds if they're really, really smart. I saw yesterday and 8 year old graduated from I think Highschool after only 6 and a half years of Study
