Is this the alien version of the hand puppets?

Back in Sims 1 sometimes sims would pull a hand puppet out of their inventory and try to entertain other sims (usually not being very successful) but I noticed an alien from sixam pulled out this strange object and it's "mouth" opened and shut much like a hand puppet.  Am I just over thinking this or was this supposed to be like those hand puppets?
