I will say that you're not that far off about Devlin. He's a relatively new vampire (Just under 100 years old) and the friend you're thinking of is supposed to be related to Lorelai, but not her mother. More about Devlin's past will start to be revealed soon and we'll learn about what exactly happened to turn him into a vampire.
