When I was a child (well, ok... I was 28. Feels like a child to me...) I used to stand on the overpass of the freeway in Seattle, and I'd look down at all the cars driving under. And I would try to realize and fully understand that each person was a point of awareness at the center of their own lives and life stories. I would try to go inside each one, while still maintaining my own awareness, and I would try to comprehend all of these lives existing simultaneously... For me, the ant-hill story is the closest I've read to that specific experience in fiction.
