Reuben and I sat in the wine cellar of an old dairy farm that had been running in the town for over 100 years.
'I wanted to bring you here because it has a special place in my heart. I grew up helping out on this dairy farm with my little sister. We used to milk the cows, and play in the nearby field chasing the chickens. Once I was old enough, the owners let me in on a little secret - their vast wine collection. They taught me a thing or two about pairing wine with their homemade cheeses, and so I thought I'd introduce you to my little hideaway. It's not a cellar that's open to the public, so I called in a favour,' I said.
'That's really special. Thank you for showing me this, and getting them to agree to having me here. It's so quaint, and I sure would love a wine collection like this,' he said.

'There's not much that can compare to cheese and wine tasting!' I said enthusiastically, referring to our amazing spread of cheese, bread, and various bottles of wine.
'I must agree, Ivy. This is a really great idea. I love how no one knows the cellar is here! I've done many wine pairings in my life, but none of them have ever been authentic like this. Everything tends to be over the top in the city.'
'This country girl does have a little bit of class don't you think?' I said, jokingly.

Reuben swirled the wine in his glass and said, 'Hmmm, well, the wine is superb, and the cheeses are unlike any I have had before. So don't even joke that you don't have class miss Arrington. You are perfect.'
My face nearly went as red as my hair.
We talked and enjoyed each other's company immensely for another two hours, making sure to go easy on the wine before he met my parents for the first time.

We walked from the dairy farm to my house, which was only a block away. I took a deep breath in as I saw my house looming in the distance, and Reuben squeezed my hand tightly.
'It's going to be fine, Ivy. I promise you that. Your parents are going to just be happy to see you, and they'll forget all about not agreeing to you being on the bachelor when I win them over with my charm,' he teased.
His reassurance helped calm my heart that was beating out of my chest. I really hoped they would all get along, and he would show them that the show was not about being famous for him, but to really find love.
We walked toward the house, and saw my parents waiting at the door with my sister.
'Thank you, let's do this,' I said. I gave him a quick kiss and then he nodded at me and smiled.

‘Good day Mr and Mrs Arrington,’ Reuben said, shaking my dad’s hand firmly, then adding, ‘and you must be the lovely Rose.’
My teenage sister’s cheeks caught on fire, and she smiled. Hiding our emotions was not a thing for the Arrington sisters.

‘Hi mom,’ said, giving her a giant hug.
‘Hi baby girl,’ she said.
‘I must just add that your father is not very impressed with this whole situation, but my is he handsome!’ she whispered in my ear.

I embraced my sister and my dad. I had honestly missed them so much! We all exchanged pleasantries and my dad offered Reuben a quick tour of our little farm. The three of us girls went inside, leaving them be, and it felt so good to be home.

‘And here is where we keep our animals,’ Billie said as they walked toward the sheep. As soon as he felt like they were out of earshot he let Reuben have it.
‘Allllrighty there son, I don’t know what kind of man would go on national TV and date multiple women, but my daughter should never have been a part of that. I don’t like it one bit, not one bit,’ Billie said to Reuben, his temper showing clearly how he felt.
‘Please, Mr Arrington, I apologize for how you see this, but let me explain,’ Reuben said.
Billie looked unimpressed, but let Reuben continue.
‘Your daughter is an incredible woman, and I have fallen in love with her. I swear to you that I was never on this show for fame. I am not someone who revels in that. I have struggled to find love for the last 5 years, and so I hoped I could find it in a different way. My intentions are pure,’ he said.

‘I still don’t like it. But if you say you are in love with Ivy, then I must just see. Maybe you can change my mind today. But you have a long way to go young man,’ Billie said.
‘I promise to prove I am worth Ivy’s heart,’ Reuben replied.
‘Fine then. Let us go inside, and pretend we never had this conversation,’ Billie said. He put on a fake smile, swung his arms in the air, and walked back toward the house.

My mom had prepared a wonderful roast chicken in advance, and so the early dinner was ready as soon as my dad and Reuben came back inside. The conversation flowed easily and my nerves subsided as the meal went on. Everyone seemed to be getting along so well.

‘Mrs Arrington, I would just like to let you know that I care deeply for your daughter. She’s an amazing woman, and I can see you and Mr Arrington raised her with high morals. Thank you for making her a fine, young woman,’ Reuben said to my mother.
‘Reuben, dear, thank you for coming over today. I’m sure Billie will agree with me when I say that we both feel much more comfortable after meeting you, and seeing how you are with our baby girl,’ my mom said.
I tried to pretend I didn’t hear their conversation, but I couldn’t help smiling into my roast.

I caught a glimpse of my sister, her face crumpled. She had also heard the conversation, but being a teenager, she wanted to always be the centre of attention, and I just knew this city boy (well, man really) was making her swoon.

After dinner, we all went to the firepit and roasted some marshmallows. There was a lot of laughter, and Reuben sat down next to Rose on the floor. He asked her many questions about school and what she wanted to do after. I really enjoyed the effort he was putting in with each of them tonight.

‘So, like, do love her?’ Rose asked bluntly.
Reuben was taken aback, but whispered something in her ear. They giggled furiously, and I was just dying to know the answer.

It was such a perfect evening. We talked and decided to swop silly ghost stories around the fire. Everyone seemed to enjoy the evening, and time flew by quickly. Eventually it was time for Reuben to say his goodbyes.
‘Thank you for letting me into your home, and letting me get to know all of you. I hope we will see each other again, and that you know Ivy is in good hands,’ Reuben said, shaking my dad’s hand. My dad nodded in agreement. I could tell he was still trying to be serious, but I knew he secretly approved more than he was letting on.

He gave my mom and sister each a hug, and then I walked him to the gate.
‘Thank you for the most wonderful day,’ Reuben said.
‘It was surprisingly smooth sailing,’ I said with a giggle.
‘Soooo, what was your answer to my sister’s question?’ I asked. I felt like I had gotten to know him enough now to be unapologetically myself, and speak my mind.
‘I told her that I’m falling in love with you, Ivy.’
Reuben grabbed me by my shoulders and pulled me into him. My knees went weak at the thought of him feeling that way, and let alone confessing it.

The kiss started off gently, but I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him back passionately. I didn’t care if my parents were watching through a window, the world just fell away, and I knew he felt the same way. I could have easily stayed the night with him after a day like today.
After he left, I just wished this whole thing could end so that I could let go fully and be with him the way I know we both just wanted to, or let my heart heal from certain heartbreak if I was not the one he chose.

‘You know, Marie, I think I actually like this young man. I just didn’t like the way he was kissin’ her before he left said Billie. He was trying very hard to supress his smile, but it broke out eventually.

His wife took his hand in hers and smiled.
‘You know, Billie, we were young once too,’ she said.
‘And that is exactly the problem,’ Billie said, squeezing her hands in his.
Ivy’s parents burst out laughing with a knowing look, and although it was unsaid, they certainly approved of this man that had come into their precious daughter’s life.
