Believe it or not, I actually prefer friendships formed online, rather than outside. (Heck, online is where I met my girlfriend)
I do have this embarrassing problem where in time, a few months after meeting someone and getting on well with them, I suddenly could go months (or even years) without so much as sending them a message online. (this problem happens online and outside) When I still manage to get in contact with them, they don't seem mad though.
Mainly, I prefer online friendships over face-to-face ones partially from personal experience. Most of the people I met in the outside world have been insufferable, judgmental, bullies, and jerks that I don't want to associate with. (Too bad I went to a school where nearly all the students were like that)
On the Internet, on the other hand, people tend not to judge you as much depending on where you go. Like on these forums, for example: We can pour out our problems, and others can come and offer advice and well-wishes (in the outside world, I've seen people say "quit crying and get over it already" and generally be nasty about it)
Most people don't care who you are online. Sometimes they just wish to have others to discuss their common interests. Hence why I prefer online friendships over face-to-face ones (that, and personal experience has soured me towards face-to-face friendships to the point of borderline misanthropy)
