This reminds me of a report from our archive, where someone had complained that he had to take a plane instead of a ship for his relocation. I think it was the 50s or early sixties, can't remember where the destination was. Well to be fair, planes were very expensive and not very safe at all. Today I would also prefere a cruise trip instead of a plane, because you can more relax (if you don't have a rough sea of course). But you get rarely a chance the price of the cruise has to be lower /same than the flight and you have to take your pto.
