Ultimate Decades Challenge - Day 32 - Year 1307 - Updated Nov. 17

I ended up redoing the inside of their cottage. From what I can tell, peasant homes in the middle ages were generally one large room instead of having dedicated spaces for bathrooms and bedrooms. Even the animals lived inside with them. However, all Thomas and Kimberly have are 2 chickens, so they will just stay outside. They did get this large stone larder from Kimberly's father and I'm not sure how I feel about it now. It's basically a refrigerator, which is technically against the rules of the challenge, but it's not like they had absolutely no ways of preserving food back then. So I'm keeping it for now.


Day 8 - End of 1301

Kimberly woke up feeling very nauseous.

She made it to the chamber pot just in time. Thomas peeked his head around the screen. "Is everything okay?"

"Yes, I'm fine now..."

They ate breakfast together and talked about their plans for the day.

Since their main source of income was Thomas's paintings, he got to work on some more while Kimberly tended to the garden and the chickens.

Kimberly was excited to see that more roses were in bloom.

She finished the chores and so she practiced singing to the rooster. He seemed to really enjoy it.

While she was out there, Thomas came out with another gift for her.

"I can't believe it! Where did you get a lute?"

"I got it in town. I wanted to surprise you. Now you can sing and play."

Thomas and the rooster enjoyed a little performance by Kimberly.

Thomas painted while Kimberly practiced.

The rooster was also very interested in Thomas's painting.

It wasn't even lunch time yet, but Kimberly was very hungry. She made them some pottage and they sat down to take a break after finishing their work.

Thomas said he was going to go into town to talk to Simon and show him the new paintings. Kimberly wanted to come along, as she was accustomed to helping the townsfolk by running errands while her father did work in town. While they were eating, a fox wandered in, intent on snatching the rooster.

Kimberly finished her pottage quickly; why was she so hungry?

"Oh, Thomas! The vegetables are ready to harvest!

In Finchwick, Thomas showed Simon his new paintings.

"This one," Simon exclaimed, "is a masterpiece, Thomas! I think you would be better off selling this one to an art gallery."

"How do I do that?" Thomas asked.

"Sometimes traveling artists come through with their galleries," Simon explained, "I will let you know when the next one comes around."

Thomas wondered when that would be. He would love to see an art gallery!

Kimberly asked Kim if she could help with any errands. She had quite a lot of errands she needed help with actually.

She set about taking grocery orders for her in the tavern.

Kimberly was feeling exhausted and hungry again. Thankfully Sara, Simon's wife, offered her a meal.

"Don't push yourself too hard, dear," she advised.

Kimberly was too exhausted to do anymore errands, but she did want to stop by the Bramblewood to deliver a message to the Creature Keeper from Kim. They stopped by their spot at the gazebo.

"I'm sorry, Thomas, I need to sit down for a moment."

"I think I know what's wrong though..."

"Are you ill?" Thomas felt dread wash over him.

"No, I don't think so. Thomas, I think we are going to have a baby."

He was silent for a moment, and then...

"That's wonderful news!" he almost shouted.

"Hello, baby..." Thomas murmured to Kimberly's stomach.

He pressed his ear to her belly, as if he could hear the baby inside. Kimberly laughed.

"You won't be able to feel anything yet. The baby at this point is probably only the size of a tiny seed."

They sat down again together. "I can't wait to meet our baby," Thomas whispered.

By the time they got to the Creature Keeper's cottage, he was nowhere to be found. It was getting dark, and so they stargazed together before returning home.

At The Sherwood's home, Maren was growing like a weed! She was not interested in Edward's cuddling.
