Just realized I forgot to answer your question about the heir. It will be Emma, and her husband will inherit when she marries. I think that's somewhere in the rules... But anyway, some peasants did own land from what I read, and I imagine that Thomas' family owned their land (I mean they are paying taxes lol). Women could own land if they were a widow or if they had no brothers that inherited the land, but once they married their husbands would technically own it. For women that owned land, any obligation to serve in a war or something could be fulfilled by the closest male relative, but they could still own the land.
