What off-grid items, skills and bonuses would you like to see in your game

While there is a lot of CC or mods available for this lifestyle, my preference is not to use this. There are times however when it is unavoidable as about 50% of my games are played micro home, off-grid, simple living, cottage industry or farming lifestyles. The other 50% are luxury homes in comparison 🤣. I really enjoy the rags to riches/apocalypse legacy challenge gameplay

Things I would like to see added are:

* food dehydrator (we have canning, but dehydrator would be another option for preserving fruits and veggies) needs to be off-grid version that maybe takes longer than the electric version
* aquaculture system built into a small windowed alcove for herbs and small vegetables, mine’s off-grid as it uses a solar-powered pump (could be added to some of the windows that are already in our BB catalogue). My system is a set of white food grade pipes with holes and basket insert for plants. It fits in a window that measures about 25cm (10 inches) deep by nearly 3 metres (about 8 feet) long with regular louvers that can be partially opened by winding a lever.
* basic crops (wheat, corn, rice, cane…) and mill to make flour, sugar…
* workbench (or special kitchen bench added to existing kitchen benches) to make soaps, cleaning products, perfumes and aromatherapy oils and medicinal tinctures from herbs and plants which could then be used like herbalism and magical potions can (new skill that could be learned from elders from the various cultures, research in books or computer, and of course experimenting with potentially negative or disastrous outcomes like the science potions). Cleaning products might super speed the time it takes to clean (half or quarter of the time it takes without). Using homemade soap could speed shower time and therefore save water (mood boost?). Mood boost when wearing perfume (multiple versions of perfume bottles already available in decorations in game).
* paper and card making activity/skill set that could include making paper pads for writing ie books and writing skill, scrapbooking that could be given as birthday presents, belated wedding gift or at baby shower or baby’s first birthday…, card making and cards could then be given/posted for thanks, congratulations, birthdays, holiday seasons…
* butter churn
* expansion of the types of cheeses we can make (especially now we will be able to use goats milk as well)
* off-grid stereo
* an off-grid computer (laptop with battery that needs to be recharged at work, at a friends house maybe in exchange for homemade gift, or at the library for example). Could also have an old fashioned typewriter or pen and paper (expansion of existing homework and journal gameplay) - for developing writing skill and writing books. There would, however, be no connection-based activities like ordering, socialising, researching, multiplayer gaming…
* 1 and 2 square hall-stand/closet/mudroom that you actually use for coat, hat and protective boots… when you come inside
* mower for keeping grass lawns tidy (maybe a tractor and hay-baler for the ranch pack) which is then used to feed animals
* Compost station for making soil improver and fertiliser or mulch
* reusable water container (bottle, camelpack…)
* mood boost lot trait for being eco-friendly
* sim able to make some money teaching/tutoring/mentoring other sims in off-grid lifestyle skills (ie university tutor sessions). Could even expand to farm-stay style tutoring where visiting sim stays and shadows for day one, then helps day two. Visiting sims can opt to stay overnight and pay to sleep camping in tents (cheapest), in bunk beds in barn with very basic bathroom, or in the farmhouse guest bedroom or in mini self-contained cottage (most expensive).

So many gameplay possibilities!

Be nice if some of this could be added as base game update, and the rest as a kit or pack we purchase to expand gameplay in this lifestyle.

  • Forgot to add sewing skill with hand sewing and old treadle machine This has been on my wishlist before knitting and cross stitch skills were available. The sim wearing the home-made clothes could start with embarrassed moodlet for clothes made at lowest skill level to confident moodlet at upper skill level. Dressmaker could receive moodlet based on other sims reactions (sad, embarrassed, fine, happy, confident…)
  • Ranch skills could include saddle making and blacksmith. Haven’t thought this through yet.
  • I would love to see your suggestions in Sims! I agree we need more items for off-the-grid. I would like to see more lights that are off-the-grid, especially the old oil lamps with the fancy globes. A blacksmith would be great with the new ranch pack, and would love sewing and more dyi hobbies!
  • I really like your suggestions. The lamps would be lovely in a ranch house.

    The blacksmith could make some lovely scrolled candleholders that can hold the candles you make at the candle making station.

    I was also thinking about a pottery wheel with more useful items you could use in the kitchen and dining room, or displayed decorations elsewhere as pottery skill levels increased. The more I think about it, the more ideas I come up with that could be quite easily incorporated into the game.
  • I know it probably won't happen in TS4, but I think an Oregon-Trail-type pack could be interesting. Covered wagons, butter-churning, snakes, diseases, hemlock, cannibalism, and all those things we hold near and dear.
