13. Someone to watch over me
“Honestly, I wasn’t terribly afraid of losing Cam forever when he moved out,” Courtenay Ross said. “No matter how much he grows up, he’ll always be a homebody. He’s going to call most nights, and he’ll visit often.
“I’m noticing a change lately, though. He’s not sad when he comes over. He tells us stories about what he’s been up to, working and meeting new friends.”

“The other night, we were standing in the backyard talking, just him and me. The paddle-wheeler was coming up the river, and when Cam saw it, he paused our conversation for a moment so he could watch it go by.

“He’ll always be a Willow Creek boy at heart.”
Cameron had lots of good news to share with his family as Spring turned to Summer. When his friend Willow Petersen learned about his promotion at work, she surprised him by treating him to lunch at a waterside restaurant in Sulani. At one time, Cameron had wondered if Willow would turn out to be more than a friend. Since then, however, Willow had begun seeing a guy she’d met at one of the San Myshuno festivals. Cam found that his interactions with the pretty brunette were more relaxing and fun now that both of them were clear about where things stood.

Of course, delicious Lobster Rolls and some superb Sulani white wine made the afternoon even more pleasant.
“I’m really glad you moved to Brindleton Bay,” Willow confided. “There are quite a few teenagers in the neighborhood, but almost nobody my age. It’s fun to have someone to hang out with.”
“You’re on campus a lot,” Cameron pointed out. “Don’t you see lots of people there?”
“I guess I’m different from a lot of people. I don’t go in for most of the university things. I’m there to get my education,” she admitted. “After class, I don’t feel the urge to go out to the pub. I come home and hang out with my family.”
“Or now, you hang out with your new boyfriend,” Cameron teased.

“You’ll have to meet him soon. He’s a really good guy. I think you’ll get along.”
“He’d better be a good guy,” Cameron said.
Willow giggled. ‘You are SUCH a big brother.”
Cameron smiled. She was right. Willow didn’t have a brother of her own, and she just might need looking out for.
“It’s what I do.”
