Is there anything I can do to get these photos back?
If you have an earlier/back up save which has them in, try going into that save and saving those photos in a room, then upload the room to your library. Keeping photos in your sims inventory can also help to prevent them turning black.

Thank you for your response rosemow unfortunately I only upload all my houses without the photos because they would've been marked as being modded. I will upload all my family photos to my personal library from now on. It's so sad as almost all of my houses had family photos going back generations. I play rotationally so it is quite a big loss. I will play smarter from now on.
Do you have any earlier save game files that had the homes? If you do, you could try going into that save game file and upload the photos from those homes that are stilll in your game to your library, if the photos are still in the homes.
