Sim gains “hurt” sentiment after receiving gift? Why?

My married sims went on a date and one gifted the other a gift they disliked. I’ve heard that when a gift is disliked the gift giver may gain a hurt sentiment, but why did the receiver?? Was the gift that bad?? It was just a tulip lol
