Something needs to be done about pet adoption drives

This event is handled so stupidly.

It starts abruptly, with no warning. It lasts for 12 FREAKING HOURS!!! You can't end it voluntarily. All these sad pets wander around your house making you feel bad if you can't adopt them. If you  had planned to do any other goaled events, you can't until it ends (which, because it's a 12 hour long event, means your Sim's day is shot if you were planning to go for a goal). 

They need to fix this so we can either end it voluntarily, or it's shorter (an hour or two), or prompt it voluntarily.

As usual, it's a good idea that could be fun but it is executed so poorly in the game that it just takes away from the fun and makes you frustrated.
