When you think about it, Sims 3 was just as broken up and subsidized. Instead of GPs we had the Sims 3 Store, including additional worlds (and if you wanted special content you had to pay more for the Gold Edition, and sets with premium items where you had to get the whole thing even if you just wanted the premium item.
The store definitely has its issues, I'll even concede some of the worlds, but most of what was in the store wasn't officially labeled stuff packs and expansion packs or even game packs and those are the problem this time around.
It'd be one thing if there was a TS4 store. It'd probably be as bad if not worse than TS3's store, but the store doesn't feel as mainstream (for lack of a better word) as the EPs, SPs, and now GPs do. That's why it feels different to me. It's the packs. When I go in a physical store I don't see TS3 store content for the in packs and bundles unless it's a world, which were ridiculously priced. The beyond ridiculously priced worlds I've never seen in a physical store at all.
You are pointing something out here that alas isn’t even special for Sims games which is that packs sold in physical stores always have had much more reasonable prices than downloadable extra content has. The reason likely is that there isn’t any competition from other games when you look at downloadable content for the game that you are playing right now. So you are likely to buy it even if you think that its price is very high. But in a physical store the packs just sit there besides packs for other games. So if a pack looks too expensive then you will likely be tempted to buy another game instead.
I actually think that the consequences of this have a lot to do with the way the packs for TS4 now are made because when we look at them in Origin we also are more tempted to buy them because we aren’t distracted by looking at games from other companies at the same time. Therefore EA can much more easily get away with reducing the amount of content and selling the packs for high prices anyway.
