I failed out of my second term of college the first time around (didn't realize you had to have high skill levels for each particular degree...oops) and then by my 4th term, I had to get a potion of youth to age my Sim back down to the beginning of young adult. I guess extending the lifespan would be a workaround, but I agree that it does take really long. Especially since doing more than about 2 classes is nearly unmanageable.
