I can confirm that at least in the past, you don't have to be a scientist to be abducted. My Victor Feng got abducted after meeting a few aliens and introducing them round to his influential friends. He's a politician, not a scientist, and never did any of the sciency things. He got pregnant too. But that was well over a year ago.
I didn't know that befriending aliens could lead to abduction!
