I don't know about "rules" exactly. When I'm not playing a challenge, I like to follow game inclinations--y'know, going with whims, random invitations, and whatever the sims happen to do autonomously, and then building off of that. But, it's not exactly a "rule," more like suggestions, which I like to follow cause it keeps me surprised. But, if I really want to do something different, of course I will.
I often play sims based on fictional characters, so in that case I try to make stories and decisions for my sims that are "in character" or fit the story they're based on, which is kind of a rule, but again, it's more like suggestions. The only real rule I have is "do the thing that seems like the most fun."
